Our pet Lucy is a Soloman Island Eclectus. She is different then my other Eclectus, They say hi or hello when ever you come into their space and whine and cry like my oldest son and so on.  Lucy, on the other hand will not whistle to me, but she will whistle up a storm with my wife.  Lucy will cuddle with me but not my wife.  Lucy has spoken to me only three times and I think she could feel my feelings and said the right things.  I got Lucy second hand from a single young man moving out of state.  He told me she was a closet talker and would say his name and whistle Bridge Over Troubled Water.  When I got her home she was very defensive of her cage I had to use a glove and a stick to get her out.  She would flare her eyes, puff up and whistle at me to say, stay away.  This went on for about  four months.  Once I got her out of  the cage she was a sweet heart.  The only time she would whistle to me was to get my attention when I was vaccuming.  She hates the vaccum, then she does her warning whistle.  When our pet Nanday, Hudini, got hurt form a hawk.  The seniors and I were feeling sad. When I went to move Lucy to quarantine Hudini, she said to me "what's wrong".  I thought, she didn't say that, no way.  It sounded like she had marbles in her mouth.  Then she flared her eyes and got in a submissive position and said, as clear as day "what's wrong."  I think she learned to associate pain with the words what's wrong from my client in the next room who has a lot of pain and I always ask her what's wrong.  The second time she spoke to me, I felt down, she said "I love you."  The Third time she warnd me of danger  (On two accounts)by flaring her eyes, puffing up at the person that was getting angrey, then doing her warning whistle, and when I still did not listen to her she bit my ear.  That got my attention.  11/2000 Lucy now will let my wife hold her and if Lucy is with her she does not want to get off to come to me.

Pet Therapy
...Changing Sadness Into Smiles

Mary Lou, a senior resident at Country Manor Pet Therapy did not like the heavy pain killers prescribed for her as they caused her not to be alert and made it hard for her to do things for herself. When her pain started to increase, she would become depressed. Staff at our facility began by handing her a baby bird, and watched as a smile would come to her face. Her pain sonn turned into love and her feelings were redirected towards the baby bird.

Linda has Alzheimer’s and the medicine does not always work to help her stay calm. Sometimes she becomes agitated and wants to go home. There is no home to go to, except in her mind as a 5-year-old little girl back on the family farm. Agitation could turn to anger. We decided to try a baby bird with her. Amazingly she calmed right down and redirected by cuddling, scratching and talking to the baby bird.

Many seniors get infrequent family visits at such facilities and feel abandoned. Some have even described feelings similar to those we all had as a child when our parents just didn’t understand, and there was no one to talk to except a pet or stuffed animal. At Country Manor (a.k.a. Board & Care) these seniors learn about parrots’ health, history, breeding, and proper care. Pet therapy can keep minds active and is something to do besides just watching TV and playing Bingo. It can come in many forms, and with all types of pets, and for many people who are somehow ill or disabled.

Country Manor Pet Therapy is a place where seniors and baby parrots learn, love, and help each other grow older together. The babies become sweet and well socialized from the elderly residents handling them. Some of the birds learn to talk early because of this interaction.
